A Homeless Business

If you could start a new business right now, what would it be?

Helping homeless people.

I already help homeless people.

It isn’t a business, per se. Sometimes money, and definitely time and blessings are exchanged.

I just went to pick up my prescriptions, then stopped for a woman with a cardboard sign that indicated she needs help.

Her name is Nicole. We talked for a bit.

I didn’t have any cash on me. I told her that. I only had my debit card and there’s not much in there to share.

Still, I asked if she needed food. She said no. I noticed someone had helped her with McDonald’s and an energy bar.

I asked if she needs anything else. She said no.

I said, “you are not alone. I care. You are loved,” and then I left.

I don’t feel like I did all that much.

I drove home thinking about all the things I could have said.

I could have asked if she has a safe place to sleep.

Asked if she has enough clothing.

I could have confirmed that she has medical care.

What was I thinking?

I don’t know. I felt flustered.

I wish we had more time to talk.

She was so timid. So quiet. Even, perhaps, a little alarmed that I went up to her. Flustered.

As we parted ways, she said, “thank you. Bless you.”

All I did was stop and share time. She gave me a blessing for doing so.

Which one of us is blessed?

Both of us, perhaps.

I bless her too.

Even now.
